We are really happy to present our first artist book πππππππππ by Ana AleksiΔ.
"What appears as light in a negative is seen as dark in a positive, and vice versa. What a negative hides, a positive reveals. In this interspace, the artist creates a new image that has nothing to do with the reason the photographs were originally created.
The male gaze, which is the basis for the entire history of the presentation, is extinguished. The image can be a portrait of a woman, emphasizing her face and internal characteristics. In certain works, it can represent an act in the way artist looks at it or something else. Indeed, this image isnβt fixed. It seems like it's slipping away with each new observation because there are always some further details in the form of shadows, lines, outlines, and damage." - Jelena MatiΔ
A line of coincidences that dates back to the 70s has brought a bag full of film negatives to Ana AleksiΔ. She proceeded to create simple analog collages by glueing two of them together. The majority of these negatives, along with their positives, are shown in the book. Thus, the book has two beginnings with an "ending" in the middle where the positive and the negative of the last image collide.
Along with themes of authorship, appropriation, and originality, Ana's body of work included in πππππππππ questions the female body, sexuality and sensuality, sexual objectification, erotica, and the relationship between erotica and pornography.
